Forward Collision Warning Light On? Here’s What Your Car Is Trying to Tell You

It is one of the newer icons on the dash: a little car with a starburst, sometimes paired with a message like Forward Collision Warning Unavailable or Pre-Collision System Malfunction. It tends to appear at the worst moment, halfway down I-25 on the morning commute, and it raises an uncomfortable question. Is the car about to do something, or refuse to do something? For most drivers the honest answer is the second one, and it deserves attention soon, not panic now.

• A steady forward collision warning light usually means the system has taken itself offline, so the automatic braking and warnings you assume are watching the road are not.
• The common causes are simple: a blocked or misaimed camera or radar, a recent windshield replacement, a minor front-end impact, or a sensor fault.
• Proper repair starts with reading the fault codes and ends, in most cases, with recalibrating the sensors against factory targets.

What the Light Actually Means

Forward collision warning is part of your vehicle’s driver assistance suite. A camera behind the windshield, often working with a radar unit in the grille or bumper, watches traffic ahead and is authorized to warn you and, on most newer vehicles, apply the brakes if a collision is imminent. These systems are self-monitoring. When the computer cannot trust what a sensor reports, it does the responsible thing: it shuts the feature off and lights the icon. So a steady warning light rarely means the system malfunctioned into action. It means the safety net you have been counting on, possibly without thinking about it, is folded up on the bench. The car still drives, brakes and steers normally. You have simply gone back to being the only one watching the road.

Common Reasons It Comes On

Around our shop the causes repeat. A windshield replaced without a follow-up camera calibration is the leading one, and the light sometimes waits days to appear. Mud, snow melt or a thick layer of West Mesa dust over the grille radar will do it, and that fix costs nothing but a rinse. A shopping cart tap or a light front-end bump can nudge a radar bracket a degree without leaving a visible mark. Heavy rain or low sun can cause a temporary shutdown that clears on its own; monsoon season gives us a run of those every year. And occasionally the sensor or its wiring has failed outright, which is a diagnostic job rather than a calibration job. The dash cannot tell you which of these happened. The fault codes can.

Diagnosis First, Then Recalibration

Our diagnostics process starts with a scan that pulls the codes the system stored when it shut down, which usually points straight at the cause: a camera that no longer agrees with the vehicle’s centerline, a radar reporting implausible returns, a circuit fault. If the hardware is healthy, the fix is ADAS calibration, re-aiming the camera and radar against manufacturer-specified targets until the system trusts its own eyes again. If a part has failed, our repair team replaces it and then calibrates, because a new sensor always needs aiming. NHTSA’s driver assistance guidance credits these systems with real crash reductions, which is exactly why a dark one is worth taking seriously.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep driving with the light on?
Yes, the car drives normally. But the automatic braking and warnings are offline, so treat it like driving a car that never had them and book the diagnosis soon.

Will disconnecting the battery reset it?
It may turn the light off temporarily, but it does not re-aim anything. If the cause was a misaligned sensor, the system will fail its self-check and the light returns.

The light came on right after new glass was installed. Coincidence?
Almost certainly not. The forward camera looks through the windshield, and replacement changes its aim enough to require calibration.
