Forward Collision Warning Light On? Here’s What Your Car Is Trying to Tell You
October 2, 2026The signs are all here. Mornings in the 50s, the smell of roasting green chile on 4th Street, the State Fair wrapping up, and hundreds of balloon crews checking the forecast for the first week of October. Fall in Albuquerque is short and busy, and it asks different things of your car than summer did. The good news is that the whole seasonal changeover fits in one visit, and late September is the perfect week to do it.
- Tires lose about 1 PSI for every 10-degree drop in temperature, so the swing from 90-degree afternoons to 50-degree mornings quietly deflates them.
- Summer heat is what actually kills car batteries, and the damage shows up in the first cool snaps of fall.
- A fall checklist covering pressure, battery, wipers, coolant and brakes gets you ahead of Balloon Fiesta traffic and the first freeze.
What Cooler Temperatures Change
The high desert gives us the biggest daily temperature swings in the country, and your car feels every one of them. Air contracts as it cools, which is why the tire pressure light so often makes its first appearance on an October morning. Underinflated tires wear faster at the edges, grip worse in the first rain after a dry spell, and cost you fuel economy in stop-and-go traffic. Your battery took its real damage back in July, when weeks of heat evaporated electrolyte and corroded the plates; cool mornings simply present the bill, because a cold engine takes more cranking power to start than a warm one. That is why we load-test batteries in the fall rather than waiting for the no-start in a Balloon Fiesta parking lot. A load test takes minutes and tells the truth: a battery reading fine at rest can still fail under cranking demand, and knowing that in September turns an emergency into a scheduled ten-minute swap.
The Fall Checklist
Our fall changeover is a single visit built around five items. Tire pressures set for fall temperatures and tread inspected before the season’s first wet pavement. Battery load-tested and terminals cleaned. Wiper blades replaced if a summer of sun has hardened them, which it usually has, since a blade that baked at 95 degrees all season smears the first cold rain instead of clearing it. Coolant checked for level and condition, because the same fluid that fought overheating in July has to prevent freezing by December. And brakes inspected while the weather is still mild, so any pads or rotors that summer traffic used up are handled before mountain drives and holiday travel. Drivers headed up to Sandia Crest for the aspens will appreciate that one on the way back down, when the grade does the testing for us. All of it rolls into our regular maintenance service, so an oil change can ride along in the same appointment. It is also worth a glance at the cabin air filter, which has spent months straining dust, cottonwood fluff and monsoon grit out of your vents and is usually ready for retirement by fall.
Ahead of Fiesta Traffic
The first week of October transforms the city’s roads. Pre-dawn caravans head for the launch field, I-25 crawls near Alameda, and everyone spends more time idling in traffic than any other week of the year. Idling is where marginal batteries, weak cooling systems and worn brakes reveal themselves, because slow traffic means little airflow through the radiator, constant brake application and an electrical system carrying the load with no highway charging to help. Getting the checklist done in late September means Fiesta week is about the mass ascension, not the tow truck. Our friends at AAA like to say that maintenance is cheaper than repair; October in Albuquerque proves it annually. The same visit doubles as winter preparation, since the first hard freeze usually reaches the metro by late October or November and every item on the fall list is exactly what cold weather tests first.
