October 15, 2025Are you looking for New Tires?
As the leaves change color and temperatures begin to drop, fall presents the perfect opportunity to assess your vehicle’s tire condition. With winter weather approaching and road conditions becoming more challenging, ensuring your tires are in optimal condition isn’t just about performance—it’s about safety.
Why Fall Matters for Your Tires
The transition from summer to fall brings significant temperature changes that directly affect your tires. For every 10-degree drop in temperature, your tire pressure can decrease by 1-2 PSI (pounds per square inch). This means that as fall temperatures drop, you may find yourself driving on underinflated tires without even realizing it.
Underinflated tires create several problems. They reduce fuel efficiency, causing you to spend more at the pump. They wear unevenly, shortening the lifespan of your tires. Most importantly, they compromise your vehicle’s handling and braking performance—critical factors as you head into wet fall conditions and potentially icy winter roads.
Signs You Need New Tires
Not sure if your tires are ready for another season? Watch for these warning signs:
Tread Depth: The penny test remains one of the easiest ways to check tread depth. Insert a penny into your tire’s tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, your tread depth is below 2/32 of an inch, and it’s time for replacement. However, many safety experts recommend replacing tires when they reach 4/32 of an inch, especially before winter.
Uneven Wear Patterns: Look at your tire’s tread across its entire surface. Uneven wear—whether on the inside edges, outside edges, or center of the tire—indicates alignment issues, improper inflation, or suspension problems. While these underlying issues need addressing, the tires themselves typically need replacement once wear becomes uneven.
Cracks and Bulges: Inspect your tire sidewalls for visible cracks, cuts, or bulges. These structural weaknesses can lead to tire failure and represent serious safety hazards. Sidewall damage cannot be repaired and requires immediate tire replacement.
Age: Even if your tires look fine, rubber degrades over time. Most manufacturers recommend replacing tires every six years, regardless of tread depth. If your tires are approaching or have exceeded this timeframe, fall is an excellent time to invest in new ones.
Vibration: Unusual vibrations while driving can indicate internal tire damage or balance issues. While some vibrations relate to alignment or suspension problems, they can also signal tire belt separation or other internal failures requiring replacement.
