A windshield replacement.

Where the Forward Camera Actually Lives
On most modern vehicles, the forward-facing ADAS camera sits in a small housing bonded to the windshield, just behind the rearview mirror. That camera handles lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection. Its field of view is mapped during factory assembly to a known reference frame. The camera knows where the hood ends, where the lane lines should appear, and how far ahead a pedestrian should look at any given speed.
Replace the windshield, and the camera moves. New glass thickness varies by manufacturer. New urethane bead height varies by installer. The bracket position can shift by a millimeter or two. Each of those small offsets compounds at distance. A 2 millimeter angular error at the camera becomes a 4 to 6 foot lane offset 200 feet ahead, which is well within the distance at which lane keep assist makes steering decisions.
What Calibration Actually Looks Like
There are two recognized methods for restoring camera alignment after a windshield replacement. Static calibration uses manufacturer-specified targets, positioned at exact distances and heights in front of the vehicle, on a level surface with controlled lighting. Dynamic calibration uses a road drive at specified speeds with the technician monitoring the scan tool until the camera reports a successful learn. Many vehicles require both, performed in sequence.

What Most Glass Shops Will and Will Not Tell You
A glass replacement, even a high-quality one, is not the same job as a calibration. Many local glass shops offer mobile installation in a driveway or parking lot, which is fine for the bond but is not where ADAS calibration can be performed. Some glass shops sublet the calibration to a specialty shop without telling the customer, then mark it up on the invoice. Others skip it entirely and leave the assumption that everything still works. It often does work, until the day it does not.
If your insurance is paying for the glass, it is almost certainly required to pay for the calibration as well. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and OEM service manuals both name calibration as a required follow-up after windshield replacement on equipped vehicles. Ask for documentation, and ask before the glass comes off.
